The media as peacemaker?

For the 2010 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebration, the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) is aiming to do something different. While work on legal reform and raising awareness of the continued threats against journalists and the media continue, we thought that in view of the rise of ethno-nationalist groups and violent actions by unknown individuals - and even clearly identifiable ones such as the incendiary cow-head protesters in Shah Alam last September - there is a dire need for media to ensure that while doing their job of reporting such events and sources, they do it in a way that is not inciting further ill-will.

Peace journalism is what it's called.

So, come to our forum and be part of the search for solutions at the most happenin' and user-friendly gallery in the city - the Annexe Central Market - this 8 May (Sat). It starts at 10.30am in total understanding of the late birds.

Hear from our panel of experts: Insany Syahbarwati, head of the Maluku Media Center, Ambon, Indonesia; Jacqueline Ann Surin, editor of The Nut Graph (www.thenutgraph.com; Prangtip Daoreung, Asian Public Intellectuals Fellow and Dr Mustafa K Anuar, who teaches communication studies in a local university.

This event is being produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. The contents of this event are the sole responsibility of Centre for Independent Journalism and can under no circumstances be regarded as reflecting the position of the European Union.

Supported in part by a grant from Foundation Open Society Institute (Zug).

Meanwhile, here's a song to reflect on:

Hunting for Witches - Bloc Party

I am sitting
On the roof of my house

With a shotgun

And a six pack of beer, six pack of beer, six pack of beer.

The newscaster says the enemy's among us
As bombs explode on the 30 bus,

Kill your middle-class indecision,
Now is not the time for liberal thought,

So I go hunting for witches

I go hunting for witches

Heads are going to roll

I go hunting for...

90s, optimistic as a teen.

Now it's terror

Airplanes crash into towers, into towers, crash into towers.

The Daily Mail says the enemy's among us,

Taking our women and taking our jobs,

All reasonable thought is being drowned out
By the non-stop baying, baying, baying for blood

So I go hunting for witches

I go hunting for witches

Heads are going to roll

I go hunting for...

I was an ordinary man with ordinary desire

I watched TV it informed me

I was an ordinary man with ordinary desire

There must be accountability

Disparate and misinformed
Fear will keep us all in place

So I go hunting for witches

I go hunting for witches

Heads are going to roll
I go hunting for...

I was an ordinary man with ordinary desires

I watched TV and it formed me

I was an ordinary man with ordinary desires
There must be accountability

Disparate and misinformed

Fear will keep us all in place
